The regional teachers union in Oaxaca suspended its assembly on Wednesday due to security concerns.

As a result, they will not announce the outcome of their vote on whether or not to return to classes until Thursday.

Five gunshots were heard near the site of the assembly Wednesday night and teachers union leader Enrique Rueda had yet to arrive, although the majority of the 743 delegates were already inside.

Witnesses told EL UNIVERSAL the shooting appeared to originate in the vicinity of the nearby union-owned hotel where some of the voting had taken place earlier in the day.

In addition to the gunshots, union leaders mentioned rumors that shock troops hoping to disrupt the assembly were seen in the area.

Due to these events, the union assembly was postponed until Thursday at 9 a.m.

According to unofficial reports, the union had voted to return to classes on Monday, Oct. 30, by a count of roughly 28,000 to 20,000.

But without confirmation of this vote by the assembly, any formal result will remain unofficial.
