The Public Security Secretariat will create a new department to focus specifically on battling drug trafficking and organized crime.Public Security Secretary Genaro García Luna on Saturday told National Action Party (PAN) senators of his plan, asking for their support in making the necessary legislative reforms to establish the new department.
PAN Sen. Ulises Ramírez Núñez told reporters his party stands ready to support the reforms to the federal public administration law.
García Luna also announced the secretariat will hire 8,000 new police officers this year.
Elsewhere, the federal Attorney General´s Office (PGR) on Saturday announced the capture of two fugitive Mexicali detectives who are accused of being on the payroll of the notorious Arellano Félix cartel.
The former policemen were identified as Rodrigo Bonillas Chávez and Alfonso Rivera de la Cruz. They have been considered fugitives since Feb. 14, 2006, when arrest warrants were issued.
They face drug trafficking and organized crime charges and are suspected of taking part in the November 2005 assassination of Eduardo Villalobos, the warden of the Mexicali penitentiary.
