PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coah. - A Roman Catholic bishop in the northern state of Coahuila on Friday criticized the state assembly´s approval of a bill to recognize gay unions, calling it an attack on the institution of marriage.Bishop Alonso Gerardo Garza of the city of Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas, said the law passed by the Coahuila legislature on Thursday should not be signed into law.
"This law seriously attacks the pillars of society," the bishop told reporters. "We know that many of society´s problems are based on problems of marriage and the family, and we are sure these will grow," if the bill is signed into law.
The measure would provide gay couples with numerous social benefits similar to those of married couples and state Gov. Humberto Moreira is expected to sign the bill into law.

PASSENGER BUS FLIPS11 KILLED, 39 INJURED
A passenger bus flipped over in the southern state of Oaxaca early Saturday, killing 11 passengers and injuring 39, including the driver, authorities said.
Regional state police commander Lázaro Rendón said the bus, with 50 people on board, was speeding when it veered out of control and rolled over near the town of Ojitlán, 220 miles (350 kilometers) from the state capital of Oaxaca City.
