A group of a dozen Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) lawmakers on Saturday shoved their way past presidential security and into the main square of San Cristóbal, Guanajuato President Vicente Fox's home town where he goes to rest every weekend. The PRD members, who were protesting federal efforts to prosecute Mexico City Mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, pushed their way past metal barricades and scuffled with security. They planned to demonstrate there for 24 hours.
Later Saturday, Fox's offices released a statement condemning the behavior of the PRD lawmakers. Presidential security also sent out a communiqué denying that any of the demonstrators had been beaten or abused. Fox's ranch is located about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) from the town square. PRD members have organized a series of protests since a congressional vote against López Obrador on April 7. The mayor has called for non-violent protests and acts of civil disobedience.
